On this night, I sat at a small bar table, drinking beers with George Parker, not 10 feet away from three of the top creative talents in the Northwest. We have an amazing ad community here. Thanks BAF, Brian and all the other people who find ways to bring us together.

When I was 13, I would deliver the afternoon Statesman to Mr Givens at his office. It only cost a dime but he would always give me a quarter. If he had already left the office, he always left the quarter with the secretary. He would also give me free passes to the movies. Remember this was 1963. That's when I first discovered there was such a thing as advertising. He was very nice to me.

Robert is right: generally speaking, Hispanics who have the disposable income companies want are fluent in English and may actually be offended when addressed in Spanish only (as in, Why do you assume I don't speak English?) Also, it's really obvious when an ad is translated directly from English to Spanish, and that's a huge turnoff that can do serious brand damage.

That said, smart companies know when to reach out to the Hispanic market. Locally I've worked with agriculture, foodservice and public service clients who reach out to Hispanics on a regular basis. Most efforts are in order to share information or influence the public's opinion of a company, not to sell a specific product.

I buy media throughout the United States and many times the client requires an outreach
to Hispanic/Latinos. My experience has been that Hispanic and Latin targeted radio
stations are significantly higher cost per point than other stations. Further, many won't
run an English ad, they force you to have it translated, which the client feels is a loss of
control of the message. I have the same experience here in Boise, that the Hispanic stations
are not cost effective.

I was in California when the media serving various ethic communities were struggling and had a hard time attracting advertising dollars. The argument at the time was that minorities read/watched "mainstream" media, so it really wasn't necessary to buy ethnic media as well. Perhaps there's some of that sentiment in Idaho. Eventually enough research was done that demonstrated -- particularly with Hispanics -- that they held a strong sense of community and loyalty, and that advertising in ethnic media was very useful in terms of strengthening brands and products and tapping into that loyalty. Of course, there are about 12 million hispanics in California, so there's a critical mass to support hispanic media. I suspect the numbers in Idaho are fairly small. Also hispanics probably fall on the lower end of the income scale, relatively speaking, and may not be perceived as attractive targets of advertising for certain products. But that is just speculation, as I have no direct experience in Idaho with the issue.

It's interesting that the Web Design "Intern" description doesn't seem to contain any words such as "learn" or "gain experience" like the descriptions for the photography and marketing intern positions.

In fact, if we remove the word "Intern" from the web designer description, the qualifications and experience required for the job are identical to that of a full-time, professional employment opportunity. I always advise my students to watch out for situations such as this.

Any AIGA members who are opposed to spec work should be equally opposed to the current trend of employers abusing the definitions and purpose of contract labor and internships. More often than not, their motivation simply seems to be avoiding the expenses associated with a qualified, full-time employee.

Maybe I am overreacting, and this internship description was just written in haste. If this is the case, I encourage the employer in question to re-phrase the description so that it can be clearly defined as an internship. The "required" skills in this description are typically what an intern would be "learning" from the "experience."

Since were in a self-congratulatory forum... did anyone see the Grammy awards last night? Was that really Elton John or an over inflated shopping center balloon that got away from the Home Depot. Pudum!
That reminds me of my mother's words: " You keep listening to this Led Zeppelin stuff it will be the end of our society." Little did she know the final death knell would come from someone named Beyonce. ....By the way is she an andriod? If she put on a helmet, I know she could bust through the Jets defensive line.
The Jeff Beck thing honoring Les Paul was nice. On an advertising note though - Neil Young received his first solo Grammy.... for package design. Mom is right the world ends tomorrow.

Applicants should be sure to know the definition of a self-employed independent contractor in this situation, versus a full-time employee. The phrase "Long term contract position working on site" borders on the definition of a full-time employee, so be sure that you, and the company, are following the law in this respect.

Sooo I just stumbled upon these ads on the Idaho Lotto site http://www.idaholottery.com/idahoraffle/

WOW - HORRIBLE. Its sad that these got on air. I bet the board that picked Davies Moore...a fresh company (since the merger) are just kicking themselves...Drake would have knocked it out of the park...so sad.
