After a brief layover in a temporary space, Stoltz Marketing Group settled into their new office space in Suite 410 of the Cornerstone Building at 9th and River – 913 W. River St.

DaviesMoore has also found itself a new home, in Suite 300 of the 805 Idaho Building, on the corner of 8th and Idaho – 805 W. Idaho St.

And as is usually the case, I’m sure both shops will find random boxes that need to be unpacked for the next year or two…

Maybe it’s the time of year. Perhaps it’s the amount of vacant office space available. Or it could be something entirely different. No matter how you look at it, there’s a whole lot of moving going on in the agency world lately.

For example:

Red Sky Public Relations: Red Sky recently (well, within the past six months or so) moved their office from the space on 9th Street to what used to be Balihoo’s space down in BoDo.

Mitchell + Palmer: The folks at Mitchell + Palmer have moved north just a bit, leaving their space on Hill Road for what we presume to be a larger location off of Bogus Basin Road, and judging by the number of new faces around their shop, the extra space was sorely needed.

c308 Marketing: c308 left the familiar halls of the Hoff Building and moved into a space at 14th & Idaho, across from the WaterCooler.

Stoltz Marketing Group: After more than a decade on Main Street, above two restaurants – first Zutto, now Flatbread Community Oven – Stoltz Marketing Group is moving to the Cornerstone Building at 9th and River. Not one to mess with a trend, they’ll still be above a restaurant. This time, however, it’ll be a few floors up from Cottonwood Grille.

DaviesMoore: The most recent shop (that we know of, at least) to throw their hat into the moving ring, DaviesMoore recently signed a lease for space in the 805 Idaho Building (also known as the Boise National Bank Building), according to the listings in the Idaho Business Review. If I had to venture a guess, I’d suspect they’ll be moving by the end of the summer.

Are there others that we’ve missed?

UPDATE:

Glaring oversight on my part — Noot Group recently moved as well – from their space on Broadway to a new location in Bown Crossing. (Thanks for the reminder James).

The Idaho advertising community lost one of it’s founders with the passing on John Givens on Monday, February 1st, 2010.

Not familiar with the name? Unfortunately, neither was I until last week.

John Givens was a third-generation Boisean, a graduate of Boise High School and after service in the United States Naval Air Corp during World War II, a student at the Boise Junior College and the University of Idaho, among others.

John began his career in advertising in 1947, and in 1952 he founded Givens-Davies Advertising, Inc. with Kenneth R. Davies. He helped grow the agency to become one of the largest and most powerful in Idaho, and a major player in the Pacific Northwest. Note: Givens-Davies would later go on to become Davies-Rourke, and in its current form is known as DaviesMoore.

Later, he went on to form John Givens Advertising, Inc., and in 1988 was awarded the Silver Medal from the Boise Advertising Federation. John retired from advertising in 1987.

Among his many accomplishments, John was instrumental in coordinating public relations and fundraising efforts for the Morrison Center for the Performing Arts, and creating the Idaho Governor’s Cup golf tournament scholarship fundraiser.

John is survived by five children, two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, February 6th.

While I never had the chance to meet John Givens, I would like to offer a belated ‘thank you’ to him on behalf of the entire advertising and marketing community in Idaho for everything that he did over the years, and those that he helped guide and inspire.

A complete obituary is available here, if you’d like to read more.

A couple of disclaimers: The site was moved over to it’s current location in April of last year, so numbers from the first few months could be a bit off. Also, since you can read individual posts on the home page without clicking through, that (most likely) has impacted the numbers as well.

But there you have it. And off we roll into 2010.

That being said, over the past month or so, what looks to be the first large-scale push for the Idaho Lottery from DaviesMoore has been making the rounds. To date I’ve seen television spots, billboards and banner ads, and it wouldn’t surprise me to find out that radio is also running.

I’m going to reserve judgement on the work, because I’d like to know what you, dear readers, think of it. Good? Bad? Indifferent?

The comment lines are open, but let’s keep things civil and professional.

Today the Idaho Lottery announced that, after a competitive review, they have awarded the Marketing Services Contract to DaviesMoore.

From the Idaho Lottery’s press release:

Idaho Lottery Awards Marketing Services Contract to DaviesMoore

Boise – The Idaho Lottery will begin its third decade of operations with a new marketing and advertising agency. This morning, during a regularly scheduled Idaho Lottery Commission meeting, the Idaho Lottery announced its “Notice of Intent to Award” a new, eighteen-month Marketing Services contract, with the possibility of two, one-year extensions, to the Boise marketing firm of DaviesMoore. With the new contract scheduled to begin on July 1, 2009, DaviesMoore replaces 19-year incumbent Drake-Cooper.

“The Idaho Lottery underwent a rigorous, diligent, and transparent process to make today’s recommendation,” stated Jeff Anderson, Idaho Lottery Director. “Today’s announcement of our Intent to Award this contract to DaviesMoore represents their ability to meet our marketing and advertising needs for the best value to the citizens of Idaho.”

After what was termed a spirited, professional competition from many well qualified agencies across all of Idaho, DaviesMoore received the recommendation from the Lottery’s evaluation committee and its Commissioners this morning.

“We see a powerful synergy taking place with DaviesMoore,” added Kym Pratt, Deputy Director of Marketing. “They have stable leadership mixed with a young, energetic creative team that we hope will bring a fresh approach to our advertising and continue to improve our efforts in new media and social marketing.”

Davies & Rourke and Marketing Media Group (MMG) combined firms to create DaviesMoore in March 2009. Collectively, the two groups bring together over 65 years of advertising experience in Idaho. As a firm, DaviesMoore currently has a staff of 14 employees and focuses on finding results driven marketing solutions based on strategic planning and careful brand management.

The contract, which had been held by Drake Cooper, will go into effect on July 1, 2009. The contract is slated for an 18 month time period, with two one-year options for renewal.

A little over a week ago, NewBoiseAgency first appeared on the scene, with a full page ad in the Idaho Business Review, a Twitter profile and a teaser website. The folks behind the scenes started following, and actively engaged with many within the marketing and advertising community on Twitter – myself included.

Central to their campaign was the reveal of the merger of two Boise advertising agencies.

Today, that reveal is complete.

Davies Rourke and Marketing Media Group have joined forces to create DaviesMoore.

From their official announcement:

Two Boise based advertising agencies Marketing Media Group (MMG) and Davies Rourke announced Tuesday that the two companies will join forces to form DaviesMoore.

“We are all excited about this union as it will not only benefit both agencies, but it also greatly benefits our clients because they get both years of experience and wisdom combined with an abundance of energy, talent and fresh ideas,” said Edward Moore, president of DaviesMoore. “On the surface, there’s a contradiction because we are a truly diverse group of people with differing perspectives, yet it’s clear that we have a common goal: to provide the best marketing recommendations and solutions possible to generate positive results for our clients in a time when they need a positive return on their investment more than ever.”

DaviesMoore, who can now claim to be both the newest and oldest advertising agency in the state of Idaho, draws on the history of Davies Rourke, which was originally founded by Ken Davies as Givens-Davies Advertising in 1953, and then incorporated as Davies & Rourke Advertising in 1973. It also harnesses the momentum that MMG has gained over the past 11 years. MMG, founded in 1998, has grown from an original staff of three and a shared office space with the Idaho Steelheads to their current size and a client roster that includes sport entertainment, recreational, retail, higher education, packaged goods and more.

DaviesMoore will service the existing client rosters of both Davies Rourke and MMG. The combined offices will be located in what is now the former MMG office space, at 6th and Bannock in downtown Boise.

To Edward Moore, Jeff Nielsen and the entire staff of DaviesMoore, congratulations on the merger, the week-long launch anticipation, and what will certainly be a long and successful tenure in the business.
